The Global Ocean Race

The Global Ocean Race 2011-2012 is a round the world yacht race for 40’ race yachts. It starts in northern Europe in September 2011 and races around the world in 5 legs. 1 boat, 2 crew, 8 months and 30,000 miles. There will be stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Wellington (New Zealand), Ilhabella (Brazil) and Charleston (USA) before returning to Europe and the finish in June 2012. Each stopover will be for about 3-4 weeks duration. The boats will carry a satellite position indicator beacon which will relay the boats position as well as certain onboard data, such as wind speed and boat speed. This is then displayed on an interactive map on the race website, so those following can see exactly where the boats are and what kind of conditions they are sailing in.

The Campaign

The concept behind the People’s Boat Campaign is simple yet ground-breaking. Rather than have a single large corporate sponsor, the idea is to involve tens of thousands of ‘mini’ sponsors, from individuals to small and medium companies. Each sponsor having a presence on the boat and metaphorically sails around the world with us. For the campaign to run fully funded we need to raise in the region of £650,000+. The campaign will be majority funded by individuals and small/medium sized companies buying space on the hull and sails for their photo or logo. The hull will be divided up into 5cm x 5cm ‘tiles’, each ‘tile’ space selling for between £25-£35 dependant on position.

A greater presence can be achieved simply by buying more ‘tiles’. The final effect will be a mosaic of thousands of pictures along the hull and across the sails. Graphics will be printed onto a transfer and applied to the hull/sails by a specialist company who have already been briefed on the task.

The race boat is divided up into 5cm x 5cm ‘pixels’ onto which individuals and companies can upload a picture or logo, with a web link. Then a full size version is displayed on the race yacht.
